I have been looking at ponies for my 11 year old daughter for hacking and small local shows. We have seen a lovely welsh cross who has been there done it all but he is 20 years old. He is in good health and is fit.

At 20 years old, I hope you have lots of money for vet bills.
if she deserves it and u can afford it also u should make sure u know how to take care of a horse and know everything about them.
At 20 years old you wont get much more time left with him and will have lots of illness, don’t go for one any older than around 5 years old.
An average horse lives from 25-30 years so yes, if its still healthy it can live a good long life
at 20 years old you’re going to spend large amount of money on medicines and Vet bills. Look for a pony, that may cost you more, and last longer in the 3-10 year age range.
Would you adopt a stranger who was 75 years old. Same comparison.
If she tries him and likes him and he seems suitable, have him vetted.
My pony is nearly 19 and convinced he’s still 4 – same as a 20 (nearly 21) year old Welsh D on my yard that does dressage.
Have a look at others that match what you are looking for so you have a few options if this one does not pass the vetting.
Also try and get a 2 week free trial so you can see what he’s like on your yard (usually done after vetting)
However, with being 20 and going to be doing a bit of everything, he might not be able to do it for as long as you need him to, the vetting may bring something up that’ll effect him and he may only be able to jump a certain height.
Working horses can live a very long time. There are several horses at my local stables who are around 25 years old and don’t seem to show their age that much. I’ve ridden a 43 year old horse before!
Having said that, you need a fair amount of money for vet bills just in case.
You could be spending a lot on vet bills, medications and treatment. horses don’t live terribly long, you could only have the horse for 5-10 years. some live to 35-40, but to buy a horse at 20 years old it seems like a waste of money, could you afford a pony?
as a first pony he is a really good age, don’t listen to other people about illness etc i know plenty of 30+ horses still going strong! yes they can get ill but lots of horses any age can! don’t buy your daughter a 5 year old, thats stupid unless you want to get her hurt.
