Why Do Scientific Studies Show That Prayer Does Not Actually Work?

Posted a few minutes ago:
“In an experiment that was conducted in, I dont know when, they tested to see who recovered quickest. They conducted the experiment on a people who had pneumonia. They had nuns pray for some of them, while the others just had to fight through it lol without any prayers.
They still got the same medical attention. But it turned out continuously that the people that was prayed for recovered the fastest. ”
No source was cited, of course.
However, actual studies show the opposite of such claims:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4681771.stm

    common sense.

  2. David Rea says:

Well why would you post sources and actual studies when you can just make it up?
I feel that to test it even more we should get two people with the same illness and pray for one, giving them no medical attention, and not pray for the other, giving them medical attention.
    That would really test prayer.

  3. Ha ha ha! says:

Intercessory prayer, perhaps not- although from what I read of the article, any sort of stress-relieving activity might be appropriate for patients, including prayer on their own behalf.

  4. steve h says:

    cos t doesnt work
any appearance that it does is placebo effect

  5. David says:

Let’s say (hypothetically speaking), that God does exist. I don’t think he is going to be tricked into revealing himself, by a bunch of petty human minds.

  6. Rabbieh says:

Maybe because scientific studies would go out of its way to try and prove anything? Religion and Science don’t mingle.

  7. Linderel says:

learn to write then at least back your lies up with other lies that sound plausible.

  8. Jesus Porkchop says:

Praying to a nonexistent deity for aid is useless. I’ll believe prayer has some effect when someone prays for an amputee and they magically grow their limb(s) back.

  9. fwer says:

Science, by definition can’t test the supernatural given that the supernatural by definition transcends the natural world.

  10. Narathzul Arantheal says:

    For obvious reasons.
You know what is the funniest thing is about this? Christians will come here and say you can’t test god. But would they for an instant argue that if the study would have shown praying did help? No, they would be all over it as proof that their god exists.

muslim don’t because they pray to satan home mecca 5 times a day

  12. nomad says:

Benefit of prayer or meditation is not transferable.
Anything other than this, is either illusion or business.

  13. Degman The Mirado Black Warrior says:

It’s quite obvious that someone must be praying that it won’t work.

Well, as I believe in God and the power of prayer I believe that when we turn to God and ask for his help we actually find a positive effect. Even if God sometimes does not answer prayer in the way we wish we know He hears.
Those who are ill will have an ability to have faith and belief in what is happening by way of prayer even if at other times they might sadly deny God. It may also be that prayer has an effect on a sensitive part of the brain like the amigdala, though I have no knowledge whether this is so or not.

  15. For the truth says:

Ignorance of man in action! How can unsaved, unregenerated man conduct experiments about prayer? Prayer is about faith in God, and for those that truly believe, prayer works miracles! i have sen the power of God , through prayer heal the sick instantly; deliver people from demons, financial troubles, addictions, etc.; Jesus said in the 16th chapter of Mark that real believers praying for the sick and their recovery, is a sign following the believers. What need to be conducted is for those that have been healed instantly by the power of God through prayer to be asked if prayer works! You cannot do such studies in an experimental situation, as the Lord is not some lab rat that man probes and prods to see how things work. Remember that the devil will try to discredit the works of God in any way that he can.

  16. GENERAL GENERAL says:

    or not

  17. Vanessa Mallalieu says:

Prayer can not make you better, reattach your leg, make you see again or get rid of disability. Prayer is just words to thin air and hope

  18. Derek says:

What you meant to say is “a study suggested that prayer doesn’t help those who are dying.” Did you deliberately type a misleading question, or do you have a problem comprehending what you read?

  19. Dogma says:

So they said, “Hey lets put their so called god’s to the test”….
remember Christians pray, “Let your will be done”, so they can’t put the power of God to an experiment or test
So God can’t operate to the obligations of men!
So this was a dud experimenting for it was requesting that man’s will to be done asap

  20. WHAT says:

    because thats what scientists found

  21. jelesais says:

Actually, some hospitals have done studies about the effect of prayer, and like laughter and good humor, patients did seem to heal or recover more quickly with it than without it. Quantifying the result of prayer cannot be done because we don’t know if God will say “yes” or “no” to what we’re asking. It may be that those patients who have a regular and active prayer life also take better care of themselves and are therefore better able to withstand illness. There really are many confounding variables which could affect the outcome, so I say “Pray, it can’t hurt. It may even help, at least enough to survive.”

  22. There is no God but Allah says:

Becos those prayers was not from the true religion of God.

  23. Species Dysphoria says:

The answer is simple: scientific studies show that prayer does not actually work, because prayer does not actually work.

  24. Artemis says:

    Prayer does work definitely.
But you cannot really change anyone’s life path or their karma – only they can do it themselves. If someone has reincarnated on earth to learn how to deal with ill health – then that is their soul’s decision.

  25. ebenjosi says:

Everything boils down to faith so if one has an unshakeable faith in God, in the self and in the drama then it is highly probable that prayers might work. In fact, God will answer your prayers when you have an unmovable faith in Him. Note that provided it is fixed in the drama that He should answer your prayers He will not do it.
He is not Father christmas who goes about answering prayers or ensuring that one’s wishes are met. This world is based on karmic principles which simply states that for every action there is an equal amount of reaction.

  26. starterm says:

I have seen this for myself, don’t need “man’s ” documentation. However, your “claim” that studies show the opposite is false, not a true statement. Medical journals have validated that “strange” things happen when many folks are prayed for. There was a hopital in Fort Worth that attempted to stop a man for praying for children, The Almighty was making liars out of them, and bottom line, there’s no profit in healthy people. As one pointed out, if you do not pray the “will” of The Father, you ask amiss. So many just pray, with out ASKING The Father if they are suppose to. Which, would mean they pray amiss, not in His will.
The Almighty Most High True Holy One of Israel is very real, and very much in charge. His name Is YHWH, and His Son is Yeshua. I suggest you spend time getting to know them, time is getting short, and eternity is a very long time to be in torment, and no water.

  27. DuhMan says:

    Because…
Nobody said “prayer” in general was effective. Can I pray to a stone, and will it hear me? Can I pray to the God in the air and the wind, and will the wind answer me? I think it would be pretty impossible to actually study since you don’t actually know if the person praying is praying to the Living God or not… or, if one is actually praying to the Living God that God would even entertain your testing of Him, to quantify His responsiveness to your bidding.
Furthermore, when a person of faith prays… they do not always pray for physical healing… but for guidance and perseverance through suffering. Even Jesus prayer, “If possible let this cup pass from me… nevertheless, Your will be done”. So, to say that they were not healed… means prayers were not answered… is ignorant and sad. It does not even prove to me that being healed was the prayer or the will of God.
So much fail. The study means nothing, but to people who know nothing.

  28. MarkitZe says:

    Don’t know. Don’t care.

  29. Jim the evolution cruncher says:

They need to come to our church on our mid week prayer service
I have seen the hand of God move when two or three are gathered together to pray.
Just any old prayer does not “avail much”
Only the heart felt prayer of a saved person will see results
James 5:16 “…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

  30. Evangelist Paul says:

Don’t know about any “study”, but I can tell you from walking with God for over 22 years that God does hear and answer prays. However, He does not answer prayers from those who are not His children, and He is not obligated to answer prayers the way we always pray for them either.
He says that if we ask “according to His will” He will answer
He also says we have to “believe we have what we ask for”.
And, the Bible also teaches that if we have known sin in our life, God may or may not answer our prayers.
One last things also….When we pray we have to pray “in Jesus name”.
You also must understand that God is not a magic 8 ball. He does not have to answer our prayers the way we want Him to, when we want Him to.
God can answer our prayers in several different ways…
    “No”
    “Yes”
    “Wait”
    “you got to be kidding”
